What is OCPP?

The Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP) is a global open standard for communication between EV charging stations (Charge Points) and a central management system (CSMS). It's the de facto standard for interoperability in the EV charging industry, allowing any OCPP-compliant charger to work with any OCPP-compliant management system.

OCPP Versions: 1.6 vs 2.0.1

OCPP has evolved over the years. The two most common versions are 1.6 and 2.0.1.

OCPP 1.6

OCPP 1.6 is the most widely adopted version today. It supports core functionalities like remote start/stop of charging sessions, smart charging, and firmware updates.

OCPP 2.0.1

OCPP 2.0.1 is the latest version and introduces significant improvements, including:

  • Device Model: A more structured way to manage and monitor chargers.
  • Improved Security: Enhanced security features to protect against cyber threats.
  • Plug & Charge (ISO 15118): Support for seamless authentication and authorization of charging sessions.

How OCPP Works

OCPP uses a client-server model. The charging station acts as the client, and the CSMS acts as the server. Communication happens over a WebSocket connection, allowing for real-time, bidirectional communication.

Why is OCPP Important?

OCPP is crucial for a healthy and competitive EV charging market. It prevents vendor lock-in, giving CPOs the freedom to choose the best hardware and software for their needs. It also fosters innovation by allowing new players to enter the market with new and improved products and services.
